Kai A. Konrad (b. 1961) is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance and a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society. He was a Full Professor of Economics at Freie Universität Berlin (1994-2009) and concurrently a Director at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (2001-2009). He has honorary professorships at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. He is on the editorial board /associate editor of several scholarly journals, co-founded Economics of Governance and was Co-editor of the Journal of Public Economics (2007-2018). He is member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and of several other European and German science academies. He is a member of the Council of Scientific Advisors to the Federal Ministry of Finance and was the chairperson of this Council from 2011-2014. His main scientific interest is on the origin, the functioning and the financing of the state and other communities and the interaction between states, for instance, in the context of tax competition.
